As a member of a two-persons team, I worked in an Antarctic research outpost, Tor, studying three bird species nesting in the area. Each year, Antarctic petrel, Snow petrel and South polar skua migrate from the Southern Ocean to lay eggs and raise their chicks in the harshest known conditions in bird rearing. The rocky slopes of Svarthamaren mountain - a cold and windy massive, 1600 meters above the sea lever and 200 kilometer away from the coast, provide a relative refuge in the continent where solid ground is a rare commodity.

High up Pirin Mountains, southwestern Bulgaria, a family runs a farm where wild and domesticated coexist side by side. Guarding centuries old traditions while adapting to the changing climate, they breed indigenous sheep, goats, horses and dogs in Europe’s most densely large carnivore populated region. The precious balance requires relentless work and dedication, but the wisdom of their practices and unique experience serves as a guidance for nature conservationists worldwide.

The Centennial Valley Association preserves traditional ranching as a way of life in the Centennial Valley, while maintaining open space, wildlife habitat, water quality, and migration corridors, as they exist today, for future generations.
